Here you will find a fine selection of handwoven scarves from the Women’s Co-ops that loosely operate among the islands of Alor and NDAO. These are islands near Timor and are accessible either by a short plane ride or an adventurous ferry journey.
All of these unique weaving’s are created in the traditional method on a simple back-strap loom.
In Alor the weavers use a combination of dyes and are daily experimenting with more. They include natural dyes from the land and sea and depict symbols that express what makes their Island life special. Whereas in NDAO the art of natural dyes has been replaced almost completely with the use of aniline dyes however you will see strong retention of the patterns and motifs of the patola cloths that made their way into the islands bride price over 400 years ago.
