A rare pair of small masks from East Timor. Timor Leste is the world’s 2nd newest nation and is still recovering and rebuilding from its freedom vote in 1999. I visited in 2000 and came upon a young man squatted on a side walk with a number of statues and masks displayed on the fence beside him. Many were replicas of Mary and Jesus statues the carvers had seen in the Chinese shops.
You see neither the Portuguese and Indonesian had any appreciation for East Timorese culture and as a consequence the carving tradition has all but been lost. Fortunately some of the artists are still creating art from the heart and these two masks are examples. The road to recovery will be long for the Tetum speaking Timorese and with some patience some of the cultural craft will be revived.
