KAIF: Each ‘hook’ represents a person in the carvers or weavers clan and each ‘dot’ represents a totemic guardian spirit. there are large elaborate kaif such as Eikas called Kai naek and smaller ones with less “hooks” called Kai ana. All are roughly in a diamond lozenge shape, some well separated from each other others butted right up next to one another. The hook and rhomba can be traced back to the patola cloths that came to Timor with the macassan traders in the 16th century and echo through the craft. There are multiple levels of meaning in all Timorese symbology the one described above is the very physical meaning. There are more esoteric meanings that maybe in another 15 years I may just be privy to.
Scarves/Selandang/Betana are worn by both men and women in Timor and serve many purposes. They can keep the sun off the head or balance a pot of water or bundle of sticks or cow feed that must often be carried up to 5km from the source to the village and they keep the chill out on those cold mountain nights.
This very effective image has been achieved by tieing small bunches of thread in the weft then dying it and weaving on a simple back strap loom to create this selandang or bet’ana and represents traditional clothing as it can be very cold in the mountains of central Timor and is soft and smooth to the touch.
Worn by both men and women either around the neck or on top of the head to help with balancing pots of water, bundles of sticks for fires or branches of feed for cows all of which must often be carried up to 5 miles daily. Handwoven on a simple backstrap loom.
An opportunity to add to your collection or give it as a wonderfully unique gift of integrity.
