A well executed and earthy textile from the Kingdom of Biboke in the central highlands of West Timor. Aquired in 2007 from the Tefan Pah Weaving Collective this lovely example has been hand woven on a simple backstrap loom and displays 2 motifs in 4 major bands running lengthwise down the scarf.
Called Hau saluf, the 3 colour ikat has been rendered in natural morinda dye on commercial thread that has a feeling similar to that of traditional handwoven textiles from this province in Timor. The 3 colour small hook and circle motif is that of the Raja or King of the area and it is interspersed with a running vine motif that is the hau which means tree or plant in local Wab Meto language.
