M604 – This friendly peaceful fellow came to me on a trip into East Timor post-Independence 2003. A contemporary mask that looks serenely upon its new nation the carver has used a local timber called Let susu, accentuating its contrasting colours of pale and brown, to advantage. He has added a curious multi-peaked hat or hair-do.

Much of the carving tradition in East Timor has been lost due to successive regimes firstly the Dutch and then Indonesia. Using age old techniques and tools that have changed little in the last 400 years the creators of these works of art have imbibed much of the Timorese spirit of independence and self-sufficiency in to each unique piece.

I had no idea at the time that I had stumbled upon an Aladdin’s cave of authentic traditional tribal textiles and treasures.
