Hand carved Bird Totem from the Highlands of West Timor



S355 – A heartfelt example of this artist’s bird totem. Hand carved out of red cedarwood / kayu merah this small but commanding bird is represented with outstretched wings, talons and all gripping an upturned bowl shaped base. Acquired in the field in the early 1990’s.

I am Julie and have been collecting Timorese Treasures in the field since 1990 when I won a prize for overseas travel in a pub in Darwin [true]. I had no idea at the time that I had stumbled upon an Aladdin’s cave of authentic traditional tribal textiles and treasures.
